Unconditional Love and Here and Now

“All I ask of you is forever to remember me as loving you.” (Powell, pg. 78) When I first heard these words from Fr. John Powell, I was touched and inspired. It was such a simple, yet powerful way to express one’s love. God, our Father expressed His love for us in this way through His Son, Jesus Christ, crucified. As I reflected on the beautiful meaning of that image, I too uncovered a desire to be an undeniable, yet simple instrument of love in this world. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta was a great example of this form of love, and I thought of one of her quotes: “The greatest science in the world; in heaven and on earth; is love.” Fr. Henri Nouwen wrote about the three stages of love in Here and Now: Living in the Spirit – 1) kindness 2) encouragement, and 3) challenge – a very fitting breakdown of the “science” of love in my life.
